چکیده

Studies were made of ASCA spectra of seven ultra-luminous compact X-ray sources (ULXs) in nearby spiral galaxies; M33 X-8 (Takano et al. 1994), M81 X-6 (Fabbiano 1988b; Kohmura et al. 1994; Uno 1997), IC 342 Source 1 (Okada et al. 1998), Dwingeloo 1 X-1 (Reynolds et al. 1997), NGC 1313 Source B (Fabbiano & Trinchieri 1987; Petre et al. 1994), and two sources in NGC 4565 (Mizuno et al. 1999). With the 0.5–10 keV luminosities in the range 10 ergs s, they are thought to represent a class of enigmatic X-ray sources often found in spiral galaxies. For some of them, the ASCA data are newly processed, or the published spectra are reanalyzed. For others, the published results are quoted. The ASCA spectra of all these seven sources have been described successfully with so called multi-color disk blackbody (MCD) emission arising from optically-thick standard accretion disks around black holes. Except the case of M33 X-8, the spectra do not exhibit hard tails. For the source luminosities not to exceed the Eddington limits, the black holes are inferred to have rather high masses, up to ∼ 100 solar masses. However, the observed innermost disk temperatures of these objects, Tin = 1.1 − 1.8 keV, are too high to be compatible with the required high black-hole masses, as long as the standard accretion disks around Schwarzschild black holes are assumed. Similarly high disk temperatures are also observed from two Galactic transients with superluminal motions, GRO 1655-40 and GRS 1915+105. The issue of unusually high disk temperature may be explained by the black hole rotation, which makes the disk get closer to the black hole, and hence hotter. Accretion Disk Spectra of the Ultra-luminous Compact X-ray Sources in Nearby Spiral Galaxies and the Super-luminal Jet Sources

The Ultra-luminous Compact X-ray Sources (ULXs) in nearby spiral galaxies and the Galactic superluminal jet sources share the common spectral characteristic that they have extremely high disk temperatures which cannot be explained in the framework of the standard accretion disk model in the Schwarzschild metric. We examine several possibilities to solve this “too-hot” disk problem. In particula...

X-ray properties of spiral galaxies

X-ray studies of nearby spiral galaxies with star formation allow us to investigate temperature and spatial distribution of the hot diffuse plasma, and to carry out individual and statistical studies of different classes of discrete sources (lowand high-mass X-ray binaries, Supernova remnants, supersoft and ultra-luminous sources). In particular, we briefly review the different models proposed ...

Compact X-ray Sources in Nearby Galaxy Nuclei

We have found compact, near-nuclear X-ray sources in 21 (54%) of a complete sample of 39 nearby face-on spiral and elliptical galaxies with available ROSAT HRI data. ROSAT X-ray luminosities (0.2 − 2.4 keV) of these compact X-ray sources are ∼10−10 erg s. The mean displacement between the location of the compact X-ray source and the optical photometric center of the galaxy is ∼390 pc. ASCA spec...

The nature of ultra - luminous X - ray sources in NGC 4565

We report the optical identifications of two X-ray luminous point sources in the spiral galaxy NGC 4565 based on archive data of Chandra and the Hubble Space Telescope. The central X-ray point source, RXJ1236.3+2559, is found to be the nucleus of NGC 4565 with an X-ray luminosity of Lx ≈ 4.3× 10 erg s−1. We show that its multi-waveband properties are consistent with it being a lowluminosity act...

Spectral variability of Ultra Luminous Compact X-ray Sources in Nearby Spiral Galaxies

Using the X-ray data taken with ASCA, a detailed analysis was made of intensity and spectral variations of three ultra-luminous extra-galactic compact X-ray sources (ULXs); IC 342 source 1, M81 X-6, and NGC 1313 source B, all exhibiting X-ray luminosity in the range 2 × 10–1.5 × 10 erg s−1. As already reported, IC 342 source 1 showed short-term X-ray intensity variability by a factor of 2.0 on ...
